Fees and Fee Payment

Regular Overdue Fees

Open stacks materials that have been checked out to a patron under a typical loan period and not recalled may be renewed or returned within 30 days following the initial due date. Following this 30 day period, the Libraries will presume the material lost and will issue a bill for lost and processing. Lost costs will vary depending on the type of material. Processing fees total $25.00. If an item was recalled, overdue recall fees will also be assessed (see below). If a patron returns an item within a month of the bill date, all lost and processing fees will be waived, although the patron will still be responsible for any overdue fees.

Overdue Recalls

Materials that have been recalled and not returned by the recall due date are subject to fees of $3.00/day for every day returned late, to a total of $30.00.

Overdue Special Permission Loans

Materials such as periodicals, circulating reference materials, and some videos that are loaned with special permission and not returned by the due date are subject to fees of $3.00/day for every day returned late, to a total of $15.00.

Overdue Reserve Materials - Course Reserve materials not returned by the date and time due are subject to fees of $1.00/hour for every hour returned late, to a total of $100.00. Go to Reserves Services for more information.

Fees sent to the Bursar's Office - Any fees totaling $5.00 or more that are not paid during the current semester may be sent to the Bursar's Office for collection. Any such fees that appear on a student's semester bill must be paid to the Bursar's Office and cannot be paid at the Libraries. If materials for which a student was billed on her/his student account are found and returned within six months of their bill date, a credit will be sent to the student's account through the Bursar's Office.

Where can I pay a fee?

Library fees may be paid by cash or check payable to The Pennsylvania State University (sorry, no credit or debit cards are accepted) at the Main Lending Desk in Pattee Library or at any of the branch or campus Libraries locations.
