  Part 1. WORKS BY LOCKE

Some thoughts concerning education (1693)

Some thoughts concerning education was the final result of Locke’s productive years in Holland. The work began as a series of letters written during 1684 to his friend Edward Clarke, giving advice on the upbringing of Clarke’s children. Although he never married, Locke seems to have had a mutual attraction for the children of friends – Shaftesbury’s grandson (the future 3rd Earl), Clarke’s children, the young Mashams at Oates. The letters to Clarke were full of practical advice from the pragmatic physician, on such matters as clothing and diet. Locke was also concerned with the child’s moral development, stressed the import ance of habits of mind, and cautioned against willfulness and “love of dominion.” He was less concerned (in comparison with other writers on education) with setting out a detailed course of reading and study.
Locke’s letters to Clarke formed the basis for Some thoughts concerning education. In January 1685, he compiled copies of the letters to that time, but continued to add material for several years.1 He did not return to it until the winter of 1689/90, after the manuscripts for Two treatises of government and An essay concerning human understanding had been sent to the press. The thoughts on education were completed by March 1690, but Locke was uncertain whether to publish. Eventually he was convinced by William Molyneux, and the book appeared in July 1693. It turned out to be one of his most popular works.2

1 It is possible to chart the work’s development. The surviving letters to Clarke have been published, by Rand in 1927 [Locke #834], by Axtell in 1968 [Locke #562] and by De Beer in 1975 [Locke #847]. Of the two copies made in January 1685, the one sent to Clarke has disappeared, but the other is now at Harvard [MS. Eng. 860]. Another copy, made in March 1685 and containing an additional section, is in the British Library, Add. MS. 38,771 (published in 1933 [Locke #943]. For a comparison of these versions with the published editions of 1693 and 1695, see M. G. Mason, “How John Locke wrote ‘Some thoughts concerning education,’ 1693” (1961)
2 The influence of Locke’s thoughts on education in eighteenth-century Britain has been traced in: Pickering, John Locke and children’s books in eighteenth-century England (1981)
