Conformitas   [1679 beginning of year]

Location:   Bodleian Library, MS. Locke d. 1, p. 5.

Description:   A brief note in Locke’s hand, with the caption “Conformitas.” The page is dated “79.” Contains Locke’s report of information from John Covel, whom Locke met in Paris in November 1678. Covel was then returning to England from Constantinople, where he had served as chaplain to the Levant Company.

Patriae Amor   (1679 April?)

Description:   A note in Locke’s hand, with the heading “Patriae Amor,” written and initialed by Locke. The page is dated “79,” and was probably written in Locke’s final days in France before returning to England on April 30. Goldie combines this entry with the following (“Amor Patriae”) under the title “Love of country.”

Description:   A note in Locke’s hand, with the heading “Toleratio.” Goldie gives it the title “Toleration D” – i.e., the fourth short paper on that subject. The note occurs on pages dated “79.”

Description:   A list in Locke’s hand headed “Catalogue de livres deffendus et qu’on trouve avec peine” and endorsed “Libri 79.” The manuscript is written on two folded sheets.

Lists of books sent to England from France   (1679 May?)

Location:   Bodleian Library, MS. Locke f. 28, pp. 17, 156-159, 252-254;

Description:   Three lists of books that Locke sent to England from France in 1679. A copy of the third list ends with a note: “These boxes of books left with Mr Brisban [John Brisbane] at our coming from Paris May 79”. The books were packed in cases, along with those of Locke’s pupil, Caleb Banks.

The copy in MS. Locke b. 2, ff. 20-21, is written on a half sheet, folded once to form 4 pages, 220 × 166 mm, the last of which is blank.

A catalogue of such books of mine as I laid aside at Sr John Banks’s   (1679 May)

Description:   A list of books endorsed “Libri A catalogue of such books of mine as I laid aside at Sr John Banks’s May 79.” These are books that Locke had sent from Paris, along with other books belonging to his pupil, Caleb Banks, to the house of Caleb’s father, Sir John Banks.

The manuscript is written on a single sheet, folded to form 4 pages, 305 × 217 mm; the final leaf is blank, apart from the endorsement.

Philanthropoy   (1679)

Location:   Bodleian Library, MS. Locke f. 28, pp. 28-29, 43.

Description:   Notes in Locke’s hand in a memorandum book used primarily in 1678 and 1679. The notes are on pages headed “[16]79. They are keyed to page numbers in an unidentified document, and each line is crossed through. These notes are probably related to the paper “Philanthropoy, or the Christian philosopher’s” (1675). Milton & Milton give these notes the title “Philanthropy comments.”
