Archiving Electronic Reserves: Electronic reserve files may be archived during periods when a course is not being taught. Archived files are not available online, but may be made available for future use at the request of an instructor.

Please note that it is a violation of copyright guidelines to maintain access to copyrighted material during periods when a course is not in session.

Audio/Video Materials: Audio or video materials such as CDs, video cassettes and DVDs may be placed on reserve at the Music and Media Center in the Arts and Humanities Library in 211 West Pattee. The Music and Media center is also equipped with a variety of media players. Call 865-3616 or contact Gwen Catchen for more information.

Closed Reserves: Items placed on Closed Reserve are kept behind the Reserves service desk and may be checked out for two-hour loan periods. Personal copies of materials provided by instructors are generally placed on Closed Reserve. Library-owned items may also be removed from the open Reserves shelves and placed on Closed Reserve at the discretion of Reserves staff.

Item Limits: The limit on items that may be placed on reserve for any individual course and instructor per semester is 35. Exceptions to this limit will be made for senior seminars, graduate courses, World Campus courses, and with permission of the Reserves Coordinator. Please contact Chris Holobar at 814-865-1886 or ereserves@psulias.psu.edu for more information.

Journals and Journal Articles: Unbound issues of a journal may not be placed on course reserve. Bound copies of multiple issues of a journal owned by the library may be placed on reserve at the discretion of reserves staff. Digital reproductions of articles may be placed on electronic reserve within the constraints of fair use.

Please note that copyright guidelines generally forbid the reproduction of more than two articles from the same issue of a journal for the same course/instructor.

Loan Periods: The loan period for all circulating reserve items at Pattee Library is 2 hours. Items available on the Reserve Reading Room open shelves may be charged-out overnight if borrowed within two hours of closing. Overnight loans are due at 9:00 AM the next morning. Items on Closed Reserve are not available for overnight loan.

Ordering Material for Reserve: Material not owned by Penn State at any campus library location may be ordered by the Library. Instructors may place an order by completing the online Regular Reserve Request form and selecting Book Type: Order Request. To insure efficient processing, an ISBN number is required for ordering.

Please note that the Libraries do not generally order editions of current textbooks, or additional copies of materials already owned by the Libraries.
*We cannot guarantee processing times for ordered materials.*

Overdue Fees: Fees for overdue material are assessed at the rate of $1.00/hour for each hour overdue, including overnight, to a possible maximum of $100.00. For unreturned material, additional replacement and processing fees may also be assessed.

"Permanent" Reserve: Only non-copyrighted materials such as exams or syllabi may be allowed to remain on electronic reserve indefinitely. All other materials, including materials owned by the Library, will remain on reserve only during semesters when the courses for which such materials have been placed on reserve are in session. If a course is not being offered, all library-owned materials for that course will be removed from reserve. Please note that placing materials on course reserve necessarily restricts the use of such materials by other patrons.

For photocopied material or electronic reserves, it is a violation of copyright guidelines for copyrighted material to remain accessible during periods when a course is not in session.

Personal Copies: An instructor may elect to place her/his own copy of an item on reserve if the item is not owned by the Library. Personal/Instructor copies are placed on Closed Reserve, located behind the Reserves service desk. Closed Reserve materials are available for 2-hour loans only and can not leave the Reserves Room.

Please note that the Reserve Reading Room cannot be held responsible for personal copies of material that are lost, damaged or stolen while on loan to patrons.

Processing Times*: Reserve materials are processed as follows:

  • Book Reserve - processed in order of submission
  • Electronic Reserve - processed according to the Need By date of each item provided by the instructor
  • Scanned files, electronic documents (Word, PowerPoint), and links to articles available through electronic resources will be available within 3 days

*Please note: Processing times are approximate and will vary depending on the time of the semester, the amount and availablility of material, and other factors. Although we are committed to making reserve material available when needed, we cannot guarantee processing times.

Reference Material: Reference material (i.e. non-circulating material located at a reference desk) owned by the Library is generally not available for course reserve. In some cases, reference material may be placed on reserve with permission from a reference librarian.
