This collection of the papers of Penn State geochemist and materials scientist Rustum Roy includes articles, publications, reprints, correspondence, awards and honors, conference presentations, photographs, audio-visual materials, research, course materials, calendars and day planners, and artifacts.

Biographical or Historical Note

Rustum Roy received his Ph.D. in ceramics from Penn State in 1948. He joined the Penn State faculty as an assistant professor in 1951, rose to the rank of professor of geochemistry in 1957. Roy was named an Evan Pugh Professor of Solid State in 1981. In 1962, Roy was a co-founder of the interdisciplinary Penn State Materials Research Laboratory, now the Materials Research Institute. In 1969, Roy founded the Science, Technology and Society program at Penn State. In 1973, he founded the pioneering interdisciplinary scientific society – the Materials Research Society. He was elected to numerous national and international scientific academies including the U.S. National Academy of Engineers. Rustum Roy was a distinguished professor of materials at Arizona State University and a visiting professor of medicine at the University of Arizona. He retired in 1999 with emeritus status. Roy died on August 26, 2010.

Rustum Roy was born in Ranchi, India and received his B.S. and M.S. degrees from Padna University. He was associated with Penn State for sixty-five years as a graduate student and distinguished faculty member. Roy was an innovator who wrote seminal papers in a number of areas of material science with a tremendous publication record. He was the author of six books with subjects that ranged from science policy to sexual ethics. Roy was known for his seminal work in fields of water science, the sol-gel process, ceramics, and microwave science and processing. Roy was a champion of interdisciplinary K-12 schooling with a focus on integrative education. He also championed integrative medicine, resulting in alliances with pioneering figures with the purpose of bringing advances in the art and science of whole person healing.
