Biographical or Historical Note
Chambers Haldane Cooke Macfall was an English military officer and author. Both parents had military ties, and he was educated at military school, and served in India and West Africa, retiring as a lieutenant. He became an influential art critic and historian, and a successful novelist of both historical fiction and adventure stories. He was also an artist and book designer. He returned to the military during World War I, serving as a captain.
The collection consists of thirteen letters, including: to Morgan Shepard, 29 March 1906, answering a letter, with news of his current activities; to Kennerley, 5 Dec. 1910, about Neihardt's poetry, and news about a cover design for his book; eight letters to John G. Neihardt, 1912-1921, with personal details, news about his work, and opinions on current events and people; to Mrs. Martinsen, 6 March 1912, possibly Neihardt's wife or mother-in-law, arranging a meeting, with a map; to Dear Gilmer, 20 January 1918, with specific thoughts on the books he has been working on or plans to start, with various publication prospects; to O'Connor, 6 Oct. 1925, wishing him a happy birthday, with news of the American edition of The Wooings of Jezebel Pettyfer, and publishing prospects for The Three Students.
