Abstract:
The collection consists of Wahl's correspondence with various colleagues in botany, mostly relating to questions concerning the identification, growth, and control of various types of plants. One folder contains correspondence and reprint requests for Wahl's most noted work, quot;The Alternation of Generations.quot; Correspondents include directors of departments at the Canadian Dept. of Agriculture, Carnegie Museum, Chicago Natural History Museum, Gray Herbarium, New York Botanical Garden, University of Saskatchewan, Smithsonian Institution, University of Pennsylvania, and individual colleagues.

Biographical Note

Dr. Herbert A. Wahl was born April 7, 1900 in Rochester, Beaver County, Pennsylvania. He received the Bachelor of Science degree in horticulture in 1925 and later the Master of Science and Doctor of Philosophy degrees in botany. He was a faculty member of the Pennsylvania State University for 40 years, from 1926 until his retirement as professor emeritus, on July 1, 1966. He was also an alumnus of the university.In addition to teaching botany and plant taxonomy, his career focused on research into the flora of Pennsylvania.He died July, 1975 at the age of 75.

Collection Overview

Dr. Wahl's papers are a single box collection, consisting of a single series of his correspondence with various colleagues in the field of Botany.

The collection has been arranged alphabetically and chronologically, by correspondent in each folder. There are also eleven folders arranged by name of institution, one for personnel, and two for miscellaneous. Institutional folders result from Dr. Wahl's correspondence with successive directors of departments in these institutions. Most of the correspondence relates to questions concerning the identification, growth, and control of various types of plants. One folder contains correspondence and reprint requests for Dr. Wahl's most noted work, ldquo;The Alternation of Generations.rdquo;
