Biographical Note
George Cruikshank was a British artist, specializing in caricature. His early career featured caricatures and illustrations on political themes, including a successful series of pamphlets created with William Hone. In his later years, he concentrated on theatrical caricatures and illustrations for literary works, including notable collaborations with Charles Dickens.
Scope and Content note
The collection consists of 22 illustrations by Cruikshank from Grimm's book German Popular Stories and 24 Etchings from Cruikshank's series The Fairy Library.
There is also a manuscript containing Cruikshank's remarks on a sequel to the Baron Munchausen cycle of stories, compiled by R.E. Raspe. Cruikshank provided illustrations for several editions of Munchausen in English, circa 1810-1820, and this manuscript may date from the same period. The text includes passages from a narrative, with notes.
Finally, there is a letter from Cruikshank to Francis Fuller, July 2, 1870, inviting Fuller to view the model for Cruikshank's design of a monument to Robert the Bruce; and also mentions the Fairy Library.
