Biographical or Historical Note

The Department of Agricultural Economics was established in 1923; at that point it consisted of three faculty members formerly of the Rural Economics and Sociology division of the Department of Rural Life, which was dissolved that year. The first head of the Department of Agricultural Economics was Dr. Frederick P. Weaver, after whom the Weaver Building was named. The department's mission was to increase the efficiency of agricultural production, as well as the spread of product distribution, and to observe and improve life in rural communities. It was renamed the Department of Agricultural Economics and Rural Sociology in 1955. According to M.C. Hallberg's history of the department, despite being initially known as the Department of Agricultural Economics, it has been a joint department of agricultural economists and rural sociologists since its inception.
