Abstract:
This collection consists of approximately 575 loose photographs and postcards, 3 albums, and various maps, relating primarily to the Congo Free State and the Belgian Congo, with images of indigenous Africans, missionaries, colonial towns and buildings, landscapes, native animals, and ships. There is also a small group of materials on British troops in German East Africa in 1916.

Collection Overview

This collection consists of two groups of photographic depictions of indigenous people, colonial projects, ships, and buildings and travel in Belgium Congo primarily in the 1890s. It includes approximately 575 loose photographs in black and white, with two large photograph albums holding labeled photographs of a trip to Africa with scenes of farm buildings, colonial town buildings, and peoples. A third album holds approximately 250 black and white postcards written in French and labeled in scrapbook. Postcards depict travel to Africa, African scenery and peoples, colonial structures and towns, as well as Belgian scenes and royalty. In addition, the collection includes a large portfolio of linen maps, dated 1887 of central Africa, with various additional maps from the 1890s.

A second group of disbound scrapbook boards hold black and white photographs of English military camps in 1916 in Belgian Congo where the British fought the Germans.
