Biographical Note

John Apostle Lucas, born on December 24, 1927 in Boston, Massachusetts, was one of the world’s foremost Olympic historians. He was a long distance runner, finishing seventh in the 1952 Olympic trials in the 10,000 meters, just one spot short of being on the Olympic team. He was a professor of Kinesiology at Penn State from 1962 to 1996, and continued teaching his Olympic history course until 2010. He also coached the men’s track and field and cross country teams from 1962 to 1968. Dr. Lucas began documenting Olympic history in 1952 and amassed the largest collection of materials outside of the International Olympic Committee holdings. He attended every summer Olympic games from 1960 to 2004, running on the Olympic track each of those games. He was honored by the International Olympic Committee with the title of “Official International Olympic Committee Lecturer” in 1992 and was awarded the Olympic Order Medal in 1996, the highest honor in the Olympic movement. Dr. Lucas died on November 9, 2012.
