Abstract:
This collection consists of original pen and ink editorial cartoons drawn by artist Jerry Aloysius Doyle. The collection also includes: correspondence to Doyle from various entrepreneurs and politicians requesting copy of the original editorial cartoons in which they were featured; black and white family photographs, staged photographs of Doyle drawing, and documentary photographs; news clippings, scrapbooks and books; mail art, Christmas cards and souvenirs spanning his professional career. Doyle's book, According to Doyle - A Cartoon History of World War II (1943) is included with the papers, as well John Chase's anthology, Today's Cartoons (1962), which features a section on Doyle, among other of the leading editorial cartoonists of the day.

Biographical / Historical

Jerry Aloysius Doyle (1897-1986) was an American artist. Doyle's editorial cartoons appeared nationally in hundreds of newspapers through syndication as well as in popular magazines, scholarly publications and school textbooks. His career, working principally with the Philadelphia Record and Philadelphia  Daily News newspapers, spanned nearly sixty years.

Scope and Contents

This collection consists of original editorial cartoons depicting a vast array of subject material. Topics include: Anarchism; the Arab-Israeli conflict; Arms race and nuclear weapons; Space flights; Civil rights workers; the Cold War; Communism; Courts and crime; Discrimination in housing; Emigration and immigration, quota systems; Elections and contested elections; Environmental policy and pollution; Health and social policy; Human rights; Labor unions and employees; Race relations; the Philadelphia Flower Show; Political ethics; the politics and governments of Cuba and Latin America, China, France, Germany, Great Britain, Greece, Japan, South Africa, Spain, the Soviet Union, and the United States. Many cartoons feature caricatures of political figures, as well as the symbolic character, John Q. Public. The collection also includes correspondence to Doyle from various entrepreneurs and politicians requesting copy of the original editorial cartoons in which they were featured; black and white family photographs, staged photographs of Doyle drawing, and documentary photographs; news clippings, scrapbooks and books; mail art, Christmas cards and souvenirs spanning Doyle's professional career.
